In Maidstone's conservation areas — including the town centre, Loose village, Boughton Monchelsea, Bearsted village and West Malling High Street — roofing materials must match the original specification. Properties originally roofed in Welsh natural slate must be re-roofed in natural slate. Properties with original clay plain tiles must use matching clay tiles. Concrete tile substitutes are generally not accepted and may require retrospective correction at the owner's cost.
| Original Material | Required Replacement | Not Acceptable |
|---|---|---|
| Welsh or natural slate | Natural slate | Fibre cement, concrete slate |
| Clay plain tiles | Matching clay plain tiles | Concrete tiles |
| Cast iron guttering | Cast iron or cast iron-effect UPVC | Standard UPVC (usually) |
We advise on material requirements before any quote is issued. See our conservation areas guide and slate roofing page.
